How To Install gtkterm on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install gtkterm
on Debian 9.
What is gtkterm
gtkterm is:
gtkterm is a simple GTK+ terminal used to communicate with the serial port.
Its features :
- Serial port terminal window
- Serial port setup (speed, parity, bits, stopbits, flow control)
- Using the termios API
- Possible to send a file (only RAW data, no protocol)
- End of line delay while sending a file
- Special character wait before next line while sending a file
- Possible to toggle control lines manually (DTR, CTS)
- Also reads the state of control lines (RTS, CD, DSR, RI)

There are three methods to install gtkterm
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gtkterm Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gtkterm
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gtkterm
Install gtkterm Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gtkterm
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gtkterm
Install gtkterm Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gtkterm
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gtkterm
How To Uninstall gtkterm on Debian 9
To uninstall only the gtkterm
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gtkterm
Uninstall gtkterm And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gtkterm
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gtkterm
Remove gtkterm Configurations and Data
To remove gtkterm
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gtkterm
Remove gtkterm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gtkterm
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gtkterm
