What is xmms2
xmms2 is:
XMMS2 is a redesign of the XMMS music player. It features a client-server model, allowing multiple (even simultaneous!) user interfaces, both textual and graphical. All common audio formats are supported using plug-ins. On top of this, there is a flexible media library to organize your music.
This package is a metapackage depending on various other XMMS2 packages. Installing this package gets you a command line client and enables XMMS2 playback of Ogg Vorbis and MP3 files from local and remote sources.
There are three methods to install xmms2
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xmms2 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xmms2
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xmms2

After updating apt database, We can install xmms2

Install xmms2 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude

sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xmms2
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xmms2
How To Uninstall xmms2 on Debian 9
To uninstall only the xmms2
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xmms2
Uninstall xmms2 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xmms2
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xmms2
Remove xmms2 Configurations and Data
To remove xmms2
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xmms2
Remove xmms2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xmms2
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xmms2
