In this tutorial we learn how to install freenect on Debian 10.

What is freenect

freenect is:

libfreenect is a cross-platform library that provides the necessary interfaces to activate, initialize, and communicate data with the Kinect hardware. Currently, the library supports access to RGB and depth video streams, motors, accelerometer and LED and provide binding in different languages (C++, Python…)

This library is the low level component of the OpenKinect project which is an open community of people interested in making use of the Xbox Kinect hardware with PCs and other devices.

This is the metapackage to install all components of the project.

There are three methods to install freenect on Debian 10. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install freenect Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install freenect using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install freenect

Install freenect Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install freenect using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install freenect

Install freenect Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

How To Uninstall freenect on Debian 10

To uninstall only the freenect package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove freenect

sudo apt-get -y autoremove freenect

To remove freenect configuration and data from Debian 10 we can use the following command:
