Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install rarpd on Fedora 34.

What is rarpd

RARP (Reverse Address Resolution Protocol) is a protocol which allows individual devices on an IP network to get their own IP addresses from the RARP server. Some machines (e.g. SPARC boxes) use this protocol instead of e.g. DHCP to query their IP addresses during network bootup. Linux kernels up to 2.2 used to provide a kernel daemon for this service, but since 2.3 kernels it is served by this userland daemon. You should install rarpd if you want to set up a RARP server on your network.

We can use yum or dnf to install rarpd on Fedora 34. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install rarpd.

Install rarpd on Fedora 34 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

After updating yum database, We can install rarpd using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install rarpd

Install rarpd on Fedora 34 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

How To Uninstall rarpd on Fedora 34

To uninstall only the rarpd package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove rarpd
