In this tutorial we learn how to install ns2 on Ubuntu 22.04.

What is ns2

ns2 is:

Provides substantial support for simulation of TCP, routing, and multicast protocols over wired and wireless (local and satellite) networks. Ns-2 is written in C++ and an Object oriented version of Tcl called OTcl.

Ns began as a variant of the REAL network simulator in 1989 and has evolved substantially over the past few years. In 1995 ns development was supported by DARPA through the VINT project at LBL, Xerox PARC, UCB, and USC/ISI. Currently ns development is support through DARPA with SAMAN and through NSF with CONSER, both in collaboration with other researchers including ACIRI. Ns has always included substantal contributions from other researchers, including wireless code from the UCB Daedelus and CMU Monarch projects and Sun Microsystems.

There are three methods to install ns2 on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ns2 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ns2 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install ns2

Install ns2 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install ns2 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install ns2

Install ns2 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ns2 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ns2

How To Uninstall ns2 on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the ns2 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ns2

Uninstall ns2 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ns2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ns2

Remove ns2 Configurations and Data

To remove ns2 configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ns2

Remove ns2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove ns2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ns2
