What is pari-gp

PARI/GP is a widely used computer algebra system designed for fast computations in number theory (factorizations, algebraic number theory, elliptic curves…), but also contains a large number of other useful functions to compute with mathematical entities such as matrices, polynomials, power series, algebraic numbers etc., and a lot of transcendental functions. PARI is also available as a C library to allow for faster computations.

Originally developed by Henri Cohen and his co-workers (University Bordeaux I, France), PARI is now under the GPL and maintained by Karim Belabas with the help of many volunteer contributors.

There are three methods to install pari-gp on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install pari-gp Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install pari-gp using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install pari-gp

How To Uninstall pari-gp on Debian 9

To uninstall only the pari-gp package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove pari-gp

sudo apt-get -y autoremove pari-gp

Remove pari-gp Configurations and Data

To remove pari-gp configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge pari-gp
