How To Install ifupdown-ng on Ubuntu 22.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install ifupdown-ng
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is ifupdown-ng
ifupdown-ng is:
ifupdown-ng is a network device manager that is largely compatible with Debian ifupdown, BusyBox ifupdown and Cumulus Networks’ ifupdown2.
It is intended as a drop-in replacement for all aforementioned suites and provides the well-known ifup/ifdown/ifquery tools as well as ifctrstat to query interface statistics via CLI.
ifupdown-ng provides dependecy resolutions between interfaces (physical, bond, vlan, bridges, etc.) to configure interfaces in a meaniful order independent of their order within the configuration file(s).
ifupdown-ng currently has support for B.A.T.M.A.N. adv., bonding, bridges, MPLS, PPP, regular tunnels + wireguard, VLANs, VRFs, VXLAN, as well as setting hardware/driver parameters with ethtool.
There are three methods to install ifupdown-ng
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ifupdown-ng Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ifupdown-ng
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ifupdown-ng
Install ifupdown-ng Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ifupdown-ng
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ifupdown-ng
Install ifupdown-ng Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ifupdown-ng
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ifupdown-ng
How To Uninstall ifupdown-ng on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the ifupdown-ng
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ifupdown-ng
Uninstall ifupdown-ng And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ifupdown-ng
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ifupdown-ng
Remove ifupdown-ng Configurations and Data
To remove ifupdown-ng
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ifupdown-ng
Remove ifupdown-ng configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ifupdown-ng
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ifupdown-ng
