In this tutorial we learn how to install gmsh on Ubuntu 22.04.

What is gmsh

gmsh is:

Gmsh is a 3D finite element grid generator with a build-in CAD engine and post-processor. Its design goal is to provide a fast, light and user-friendly meshing tool with parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities. Gmsh is built around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver and post-processing. The specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface or in ASCII text files using Gmsh’s own scripting language.

There are three methods to install gmsh on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install gmsh Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install gmsh using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install gmsh

Install gmsh Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install gmsh using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install gmsh

Install gmsh Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install gmsh using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install gmsh

How To Uninstall gmsh on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the gmsh package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove gmsh

Uninstall gmsh And Its Dependencies

To uninstall gmsh and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove gmsh

Remove gmsh Configurations and Data

To remove gmsh configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge gmsh

Remove gmsh configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove gmsh configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gmsh
