How To Install gap on Ubuntu 22.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install gap
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is gap
gap is:
GAP is a system for computational discrete algebra, with particular emphasis on Computational Group Theory. GAP provides a programming language, a library of thousands of functions implementing algebraic algorithms written in the GAP language as well as large data libraries of algebraic objects. GAP is used in research and teaching for studying groups and their representations, rings, vector spaces, algebras, combinatorial structures, and more.
This is a dummy package that depends on the standard GAP components.
There are three methods to install gap
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gap Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gap
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gap
Install gap Using apt

sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gap
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gap
Install gap Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gap
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gap
How To Uninstall gap on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the gap
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gap
Uninstall gap And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gap
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gap
Remove gap Configurations and Data
To remove gap
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gap
Remove gap configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gap
