How To Install blktrace on Ubuntu 22.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install blktrace
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is blktrace
blktrace is:
blktrace is a block layer IO tracing mechanism which provides detailed information about request queue operations up to user space. There are three major components that are provided:
blktrace: A utility which transfers event traces from the kernel into either long-term on-disk storage, or provides direct formatted output (via blkparse).
blkparse: A utility which formats events stored in files, or when run in live mode directly outputs data collected by blktrace.
iowatcher: A utility to visualize block I/O patterns. It generates graphs from blktrace runs to help visualize IO patterns and performance. It can plot multiple blktrace runs together, making it easy to compare the differences between different benchmark runs.
There are three methods to install blktrace
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install blktrace Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install blktrace
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install blktrace

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install blktrace
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install blktrace
Install blktrace Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install blktrace
using aptitude

sudo aptitude -y install blktrace
How To Uninstall blktrace on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the blktrace
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove blktrace
Uninstall blktrace And Its Dependencies
To uninstall blktrace
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove blktrace
Remove blktrace Configurations and Data
To remove blktrace
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge blktrace
Remove blktrace configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
