In this tutorial we learn how to install primus on Ubuntu 22.04.

What is primus

primus is:

Primus is a shared library that provides OpenGL and GLX APIs and implements low-overhead local-only client-side OpenGL offloading via GLX forking, similar to VirtualGL. It intercepts GLX calls and redirects GL rendering to a secondary X display, presumably driven by a faster GPU. On swapping buffers, rendered contents are read back using a PBO and copied onto the drawable it was supposed to be rendered on in the first place.

Primus is currently intended to be used alongside Bumblebee and provides a drop-in replacement for optirun (i.e. “primusrun”).

There are three methods to install primus on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install primus Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install primus using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install primus

Install primus Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install primus using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install primus

Install primus Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install primus using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install primus

How To Uninstall primus on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the primus package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove primus

Uninstall primus And Its Dependencies

To uninstall primus and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove primus

Remove primus Configurations and Data

To remove primus configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge primus

Remove primus configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove primus configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge primus
