What is postgis

postgis is:

PostGIS adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS “spatially enables” the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS), much like ESRI’s SDE or Oracle’s Spatial extension. PostGIS follows the OpenGIS “Simple Features Specification for SQL”.

This package contains the PostGIS userland binaries for importing and exporting shape and raster files: pgsql2shp, raster2pgsql, and shp2pgsql.

There are three methods to install postgis on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install postgis Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install postgis using apt-get by running the following command:

After updating apt database, We can install postgis using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install postgis

Install postgis Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install postgis using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install postgis

How To Uninstall postgis on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the postgis package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove postgis

Uninstall postgis And Its Dependencies

To uninstall postgis and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove postgis

Remove postgis Configurations and Data

To remove postgis configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge postgis

Remove postgis configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove postgis configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge postgis
