How To Install opensysusers on Ubuntu 22.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install opensysusers
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is opensysusers
opensysusers is:
Opensysusers uses the files from sysusers.d directory to create system users and groups and to add users to groups, at package installation or boot time. This tool may be used to allocate system users and groups only, it is not useful for creating non-system (i.e. regular, “human”) users and groups, as it accesses /etc/passwd and /etc/group directly, bypassing any more complex user databases, for example any database involving NIS or LDAP.
Opensysusers is an alternative implementation of systemd-sysusers that may work on systems with or without systemd installed.
There are three methods to install opensysusers
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install opensysusers Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install opensysusers
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install opensysusers

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install opensysusers
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install opensysusers
Install opensysusers Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install opensysusers
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install opensysusers
How To Uninstall opensysusers on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the opensysusers
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove opensysusers
Uninstall opensysusers And Its Dependencies
To uninstall opensysusers
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove opensysusers
Remove opensysusers Configurations and Data
To remove opensysusers
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge opensysusers
