What is nagios4

nagios4 is:

Nagios is a monitoring and management system for hosts, services and networks. This is a metapackage installing both the monitoring daemon and the web interface.

Nagios’ features include:

  • Monitoring of network services (via TCP port, SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.)
  • Plugin interface to allow for user-developed service checks
  • Contact notifications when problems occur and get resolved (via email, pager, or user-defined method)
  • Ability to define event handlers to be run during service or host events (for proactive problem resolution)
  • Web output (current status, notifications, problem history, log file, etc.)

There are three methods to install nagios4 on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install nagios4 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install nagios4 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install nagios4

Install nagios4 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install nagios4 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install nagios4

Install nagios4 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install nagios4 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install nagios4

How To Uninstall nagios4 on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the nagios4 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove nagios4

Uninstall nagios4 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall nagios4 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove nagios4

Remove nagios4 Configurations and Data

To remove nagios4 configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge nagios4

Remove nagios4 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove nagios4 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge nagios4
