How To Install mutter on Ubuntu 22.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mutter
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is mutter
mutter is:
Mutter is a Wayland display server and X11 window manager and compositor library. It contains functionality related to, among other things, window management, window compositing, focus tracking, workspace management, keybindings and monitor configuration.
Internally it uses a fork of Cogl, a hardware acceleration abstraction library used to simplify usage of OpenGL pipelines, as well as a fork of Clutter, a scene graph and user interface toolkit.
This package contains the mutter executable. It can be used as a standalone window manager, but is primarily intended for debugging.
There are three methods to install mutter
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mutter Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mutter
Install mutter Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mutter
Install mutter Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mutter
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mutter
How To Uninstall mutter on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the mutter
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mutter
Uninstall mutter And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mutter
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mutter
Remove mutter Configurations and Data
To remove mutter
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mutter
Remove mutter configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mutter
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mutter
