What is gdbmtool

gdbmtool is:

GNU dbm (‘gdbm’) is a library of database functions that use extendible hashing and works similarly to the standard UNIX ‘dbm’ functions.

The basic use of ‘gdbm’ is to store key/data pairs in a data file, thus providing a persistent version of the ‘dictionary’ Abstract Data Type (‘hash’ to perl programmers). This package includes following command line tools:

  • gdbm_dump – dump database content into system-independant format
  • gdbm_load – recreate database from dump, created by gdbm_dump
  • gdbmtool – view and modify an existing database or to create a new one.

There are three methods to install gdbmtool on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install gdbmtool Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install gdbmtool using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install gdbmtool

How To Uninstall gdbmtool on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the gdbmtool package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove gdbmtool

Uninstall gdbmtool And Its Dependencies

To uninstall gdbmtool and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove gdbmtool

Remove gdbmtool Configurations and Data

To remove gdbmtool configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge gdbmtool
