How To Install f2c on Ubuntu 22.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install f2c on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is f2c
f2c is:
Translates FORTRAN 77 (with some extensions) into C, so that it can then be compiled and run on a system with no Fortran compiler. The C files must then be linked against the appropriate libraries.
This is an actively maintained FORTRAN to C translator and with the fort77 frontend provides an ideal way to compile FORTRAN routines as black boxes (for example for invocation from C). Source level debugging facilities are not available, and error messages are not as well developed as in g77.
There are three methods to install f2c on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install f2c Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install f2c using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install f2c
Install f2c Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install f2c using apt by running the following command:

Install f2c Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install f2c using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install f2c
How To Uninstall f2c on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the f2c package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove f2c
Uninstall f2c And Its Dependencies
To uninstall f2c and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove f2c
Remove f2c Configurations and Data
To remove f2c configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge f2c
Remove f2c configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
