python-ply is:
PLY is yet another implementation of lex and yacc for Python. Although several other parsing tools are available for Python, there are several reasons why you might want to take a look at PLY:
- It’s implemented entirely in Python.
- It uses LR-parsing which is reasonably efficient and well suited for larger grammars.
- PLY provides most of the standard lex/yacc features including support for empty productions, precedence rules, error recovery, and support for ambiguous grammars.

There are three methods to install python-ply
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install python-ply Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get

sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install python-ply
using apt-get

sudo apt-get -y install python-ply

After updating apt database, We can install python-ply

Install python-ply Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude

sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install python-ply

How To Uninstall python-ply on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the python-ply
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove python-ply
Uninstall python-ply And Its Dependencies
To uninstall python-ply
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-ply
Remove python-ply Configurations and Data
To remove python-ply
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge python-ply
Remove python-ply configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
