In this tutorial we learn how to install pidgin-otr on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is pidgin-otr

pidgin-otr is:

OTR allows you to have private conversations over IM by providing:

  • Encryption
    • No one else can read your instant messages.
  • Authentication
    • You are assured the correspondent is who you think it is.
  • Deniability
    • The messages you send do not have digital signatures that are checkable by a third party. Anyone can forge messages after a conversation to make them look like they came from you. However, during a conversation, your correspondent is assured the messages they see are authentic and unmodified.
  • Perfect forward secrecy
    • If you lose control of your private keys, no previous conversation is compromised.

This is a Pidgin plugin which implements Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging. Task: xubuntu-desktop, ubuntustudio-desktop

There are three methods to install pidgin-otr on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install pidgin-otr Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install pidgin-otr using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install pidgin-otr

Install pidgin-otr Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install pidgin-otr using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install pidgin-otr

Install pidgin-otr Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install pidgin-otr using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install pidgin-otr

How To Uninstall pidgin-otr on Ubuntu 20.04

To uninstall only the pidgin-otr package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove pidgin-otr

Uninstall pidgin-otr And Its Dependencies

To uninstall pidgin-otr and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove pidgin-otr

Remove pidgin-otr Configurations and Data

To remove pidgin-otr configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge pidgin-otr

Remove pidgin-otr configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove pidgin-otr configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pidgin-otr
