Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install pg-activity on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is pg-activity

pg-activity is:

PgActivity is a curses-based realtime utility to display information from a running PostgreSQL database server.

It is modelled after the standard ’top’ utility, and displays information such as:

  • the running, waiting and blocking queries
  • cpu, memory and i/o usage of each query
  • the queries execution time

It also provides interactive commands to sort, filter, scroll and extend the queries list displayed.

There are three methods to install pg-activity on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install pg-activity Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install pg-activity using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install pg-activity

Install pg-activity Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install pg-activity using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install pg-activity

Install pg-activity Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install pg-activity using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install pg-activity

How To Uninstall pg-activity on Ubuntu 20.04

To uninstall only the pg-activity package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove pg-activity

Uninstall pg-activity And Its Dependencies

To uninstall pg-activity and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove pg-activity

Remove pg-activity Configurations and Data

To remove pg-activity configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge pg-activity

Remove pg-activity configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove pg-activity configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pg-activity
