In this tutorial we learn how to install nat-traverse on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is nat-traverse

nat-traverse is:

nat-traverse establishes connections between nodes which are behind NAT gateways, i.e. hosts which do not have public IP addresses. Additionally, you can setup a small VPN by using pppd on top of nat-traverse. nat-traverse does not need an external server on the Internet, and it isn’t necessary to reconfigure the involved NAT gateways, either. nat-traverse works out-of-the-box.

There are three methods to install nat-traverse on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install nat-traverse Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install nat-traverse using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install nat-traverse

Install nat-traverse Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install nat-traverse using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install nat-traverse

Install nat-traverse Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install nat-traverse using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install nat-traverse

How To Uninstall nat-traverse on Ubuntu 20.04

To uninstall only the nat-traverse package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove nat-traverse

Uninstall nat-traverse And Its Dependencies

To uninstall nat-traverse and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove nat-traverse

Remove nat-traverse Configurations and Data

To remove nat-traverse configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge nat-traverse

Remove nat-traverse configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove nat-traverse configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge nat-traverse
