In this tutorial we learn how to install mactelnet-client on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is mactelnet-client

mactelnet-client is:

Ping, discovery and telnet tools for connecting to Mikrotik RouterOS devices, or other MAC-Telnetd powered machines/devices.

This tool can communicate over the local area network using UDP packets with a MAC-address as destination. You can telnet Linux machines that have installed mactelnet-server, or a Mikrotik RouterOS device.

Uses Mikrotik’s own proprietary protocol. Included are also MNDP discovery application, and macping to ping via the mactelnet protocol.

There are three methods to install mactelnet-client on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mactelnet-client Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mactelnet-client using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install mactelnet-client

Install mactelnet-client Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install mactelnet-client using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install mactelnet-client

Install mactelnet-client Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install mactelnet-client using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install mactelnet-client

How To Uninstall mactelnet-client on Ubuntu 20.04

To uninstall only the mactelnet-client package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove mactelnet-client

Uninstall mactelnet-client And Its Dependencies

To uninstall mactelnet-client and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove mactelnet-client

Remove mactelnet-client Configurations and Data

To remove mactelnet-client configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge mactelnet-client

Remove mactelnet-client configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove mactelnet-client configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mactelnet-client
