How To Install fam on Ubuntu 20.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install fam
on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is fam
fam is:
FAM monitors files and directories, notifying interested applications of changes.
This package provides a server that can monitor a given list of files and notify applications through a socket. If the kernel supports dnotify (kernels >= 2.4.x) FAM is notified directly by the kernel. Otherwise it has to poll the files’ status. FAM can also provide an RPC service for monitoring remote files (such as on a mounted NFS filesystem).
There are three methods to install fam
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install fam Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install fam
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install fam

Update apt database with apt

After updating apt database, We can install fam
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install fam
Install fam Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude

After updating apt database, We can install fam

How To Uninstall fam on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the fam
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove fam
Uninstall fam And Its Dependencies
To uninstall fam
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove fam
Remove fam Configurations and Data
To remove fam
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge fam
