In this tutorial we learn how to install ejabberd on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is ejabberd

ejabberd is:

ejabberd is a Jabber/XMPP + MQTT server written in Erlang, featuring:

  • distributed operation with load-balancing across a cluster;
  • fault-tolerant database replication and storage on multiple nodes, allowing nodes to be added or replaced “on the fly”;
  • virtual hosting (several virtual domains can be served using a single ejabberd instance);
  • XMPP compliance;
  • MQTT 5 compliance;
  • web-based administration;
  • SSL/TLS support;
  • conferencing via Multi-User Chat;
  • Jabber Users Directory, based on users’ vCards;

  • shared roster.

There are three methods to install ejabberd on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ejabberd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ejabberd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install ejabberd

Install ejabberd Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install ejabberd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install ejabberd

Install ejabberd Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ejabberd using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ejabberd

How To Uninstall ejabberd on Ubuntu 20.04

To uninstall only the ejabberd package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ejabberd

Uninstall ejabberd And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ejabberd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ejabberd

Remove ejabberd Configurations and Data

To remove ejabberd configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ejabberd

Remove ejabberd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove ejabberd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ejabberd
