In this tutorial we learn how to install elpa-ztree on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is elpa-ztree

elpa-ztree is:

ztree is a project dedicated to implementation of several text-tree applications inside GNU Emacs. It consists of 2 subprojects: ztree-diff and ztree-dir.

ztree-diff is a directory-diff tool for Emacs inspired by commercial tools like Beyond Compare or Araxis Merge. It supports showing the difference between two directories; calling Ediff for not matching files, copying between directories, deleting file/directories, hiding/showing equal files/directories.

ztree-dir is a simple text-mode directory tree for Emacs.

There are three methods to install elpa-ztree on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install elpa-ztree Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install elpa-ztree using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install elpa-ztree

Install elpa-ztree Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install elpa-ztree using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install elpa-ztree

Install elpa-ztree Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install elpa-ztree using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install elpa-ztree

How To Uninstall elpa-ztree on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the elpa-ztree package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove elpa-ztree

Uninstall elpa-ztree And Its Dependencies

To uninstall elpa-ztree and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove elpa-ztree

To remove elpa-ztree configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge elpa-ztree

We can use the following command to remove elpa-ztree configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
