How To Install clang-format on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install clang-format on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is clang-format
clang-format is:
Clang-format is both a library and a stand-alone tool with the goal of automatically reformatting C++ sources files according to configurable style guides. To do so, clang-format uses Clang’s Lexer to transform an input file into a token stream and then changes all the whitespace around those tokens. The goal is for clang-format to both serve both as a user tool (ideally with powerful IDE integrations) and part of other refactoring tools, e.g. to do a reformatting of all the lines changed during a renaming.
This is a dependency package providing the clang format tool.
There are three methods to install clang-format on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install clang-format Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install clang-format using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install clang-format
Install clang-format Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install clang-format using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install clang-format
Install clang-format Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install clang-format using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install clang-format
How To Uninstall clang-format on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the clang-format package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove clang-format
Uninstall clang-format And Its Dependencies
To uninstall clang-format and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove clang-format
Remove clang-format Configurations and Data
To remove clang-format configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge clang-format
Remove clang-format configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove clang-format configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge clang-format
