In this tutorial we learn how to install blcr-util on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is blcr-util

blcr-util is:

BLCR (Berkeley Lab Checkpoint/Restart) allows programs running on Linux to be “checkpointed” (written entirely to a file), and then later “restarted”.

BLCR can checkpoint both single- and multithreaded (pthreads) programs linked with the NPTL implementation of pthreads. BLCR is also able to save and restore groups of related processes together with the pipes that connect them.

This package contains utilities needed to launch and restart unmodified processes with checkpointing support.

There are three methods to install blcr-util on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install blcr-util Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install blcr-util using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install blcr-util

How To Uninstall blcr-util on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the blcr-util package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove blcr-util

Uninstall blcr-util And Its Dependencies

To uninstall blcr-util and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove blcr-util

Remove blcr-util Configurations and Data

To remove blcr-util configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge blcr-util
