What is lnav

The log file navigator, lnav, is an enhanced log file viewer that takes advantage of any semantic information that can be gleaned from the files being viewed, such as timestamps and log levels. Using this extra semantic information, lnav can do things like interleaving messages from different files, generate histograms of messages over time, and providing hotkeys for navigating through the file. It is hoped that these features will allow the user to quickly and efficiently zero in on problems.

There are three methods to install lnav on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install lnav Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install lnav using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install lnav

Install lnav Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install lnav using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install lnav

Install lnav Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install lnav using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install lnav

How To Uninstall lnav on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the lnav package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove lnav

Uninstall lnav And Its Dependencies

To uninstall lnav and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove lnav

Remove lnav Configurations and Data

To remove lnav configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge lnav

Remove lnav configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove lnav configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge lnav
