How To Install herbstluftwm on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install herbstluftwm on Kali Linux.
What is herbstluftwm

In herbstluftwm the layout is based on splitting frames into subframes which can be split again or can be filled with windows, Tags (or workspaces or virtual desktops or …) can be added/removed at runtime. Each tag contains an own layout and exactly one tag is viewed on each monitor. The tags are monitor independent.
It is configured at runtime via ipc calls from herbstclient. So the configuration file is just a script which is run on startup.
There are three methods to install herbstluftwm on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install herbstluftwm Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install herbstluftwmInstall herbstluftwm Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install herbstluftwmInstall herbstluftwm Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install herbstluftwmHow To Uninstall herbstluftwm on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the herbstluftwm package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove herbstluftwmUninstall herbstluftwm And Its Dependencies
To uninstall herbstluftwm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove herbstluftwmRemove herbstluftwm Configurations and Data
To remove herbstluftwm configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge herbstluftwmRemove herbstluftwm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove herbstluftwm configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge herbstluftwmDependencies
