In this tutorial we learn how to install gpscorrelate on Kali Linux.

What is gpscorrelate

gpscorrelate is:

gpscorrelate fills EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) fields of digital photos related to GPS (Global Positioning System) information (e.g.: GPSLatitude, GPSLongitude, GPSAltitude, …). The act of filling those fields is referred to as “correlation”.

Inputs of the correlation process are a set of JPEG images and GPS data encoded in GPX (GPS Exchange Format) format.

If GPS data are available at the precise moment the photo was taken (with a 1-second granularity) the GPS data are stored unmodified in EXIF fields. If they are not linear interpolation of GPS data available at moments before and after the photo was taken can be used.

Both a command line tool (package gpscorrelate) and a GTK+ graphical user interface for it (package gpscorrelate-gui) are provided.

This package contains the command line tool and the documentation in HTML format.

There are three methods to install gpscorrelate on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install gpscorrelate Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install gpscorrelate using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install gpscorrelate

Install gpscorrelate Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install gpscorrelate using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install gpscorrelate

Install gpscorrelate Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install gpscorrelate using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install gpscorrelate
