What is dnsrecon

DNSRecon is a Python script that provides the ability to perform:

  • Check all NS Records for Zone Transfers.
  • Enumerate General DNS Records for a given Domain (MX, SOA, NS, A, AAAA, SPF and TXT).
  • Perform common SRV Record Enumeration.
  • Top Level Domain (TLD) Expansion.
  • Check for Wildcard Resolution.
  • Brute Force subdomain and host A and AAAA records given a domain and a wordlist.
  • Perform a PTR Record lookup for a given IP Range or CIDR.
  • Check a DNS Server Cached records for A, AAAA and CNAME
  • Records provided a list of host records in a text file to check.
  • Enumerate Hosts and Subdomains using Google

There are three methods to install dnsrecon on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install dnsrecon Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install dnsrecon using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install dnsrecon

Install dnsrecon Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install dnsrecon using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install dnsrecon

Install dnsrecon Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install dnsrecon using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install dnsrecon

How To Uninstall dnsrecon on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the dnsrecon package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove dnsrecon

Uninstall dnsrecon And Its Dependencies

To uninstall dnsrecon and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove dnsrecon

Remove dnsrecon Configurations and Data

To remove dnsrecon configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge dnsrecon

Remove dnsrecon configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove dnsrecon configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge dnsrecon
