What is cgdb

CGDB is a curses frontend to the GNU Debugger (GDB). The goal of CGDB is to be lightweight and responsive; not encumbered with unnecessary features.

The interface is designed to deliver the familiar GDB text interface, with a split screen showing the source as it executes. The UI is modeled on the classic Unix text editor, vi. Those familiar with vi should feel right at home using CGDB.

Some features offered by CGDB are:

  • Syntax-highlighted source window
  • Visual breakpoint setting
  • Keyboard shortcuts for common functions
  • Searching source window (using regexp)

There are three methods to install cgdb on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install cgdb Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install cgdb using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install cgdb

Install cgdb Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install cgdb using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install cgdb

Install cgdb Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install cgdb using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install cgdb

How To Uninstall cgdb on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the cgdb package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove cgdb

Uninstall cgdb And Its Dependencies

To uninstall cgdb and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove cgdb

Remove cgdb Configurations and Data

To remove cgdb configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge cgdb

Remove cgdb configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove cgdb configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge cgdb
