In this tutorial we learn how to install bear on Kali Linux.

What is bear

bear is:

Bear records the flags passed to the compiler for each translation unit and stores them in a JSON file. This file can be used by Clang’s tooling interface and programs like clang-check to process a translation unit.

cmake supports the generation of JSON compilation databases out of the box. For any other build system that does not support this, Bear can be used instead to intercept the invocation of the compiler.

There are three methods to install bear on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install bear Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install bear using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install bear

Install bear Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install bear using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install bear

Install bear Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install bear using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install bear

How To Uninstall bear on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the bear package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove bear

To uninstall bear and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove bear

Remove bear Configurations and Data

To remove bear configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge bear
