In this tutorial we learn how to install zhcon on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is zhcon

zhcon is:

Zhcon is a fast Linux console Chinese system which supports framebuffer device. It can display Chinese, Japanese or Korean double byte characters on console.

Features include:

  • Full support for Linux FrameBuffer device (from 640x480x8bpp to 1024x768x32bpp)
  • Multiple language support (GB2312, GBK, BIG5, JIS, KSC)
  • Auto-detect and convert between GB2312 and BIG5 encoding (like hztty)
  • Hot key to change language encoding on the fly
  • Can use input method from MS Windows 98 Chinese version or UCDOS for MS-DOS

There are three methods to install zhcon on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install zhcon Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install zhcon using apt-get by running the following command:

After updating apt database, We can install zhcon using apt by running the following command:

Install zhcon Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install zhcon using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install zhcon

How To Uninstall zhcon on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the zhcon package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove zhcon

To uninstall zhcon and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove zhcon

Remove zhcon Configurations and Data

To remove zhcon configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge zhcon

Remove zhcon configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove zhcon configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
