How To Install xstow on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install xstow on Kali Linux.

What is xstow

xstow is:

XStow (like GNU Stow) is a program for managing the installation of software packages, keeping them separate (/usr/local/stow/emacs vs. /usr/local/stow/perl, for example) while making them appear to be installed in the same place (/usr/local).

The extended features include: creation of symlinks with absolute path names, traversal link support (create a link from /usr/share/man to /usr/man), multiple stow directories support, shell pattern matching, regular expressions support, and global settings via configuration files.

There are three methods to install xstow on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install xstow Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install xstow using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install xstow

Install xstow Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install xstow using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install xstow

Install xstow Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install xstow using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install xstow

How To Uninstall xstow on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the xstow package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove xstow

Uninstall xstow And Its Dependencies

To uninstall xstow and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove xstow

Remove xstow Configurations and Data

To remove xstow configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge xstow

Remove xstow configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove xstow configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xstow
