In this tutorial we learn how to install xpra on AlmaLinux 8.

What is xpra

Xpra is “screen for X” host, direct their display to your local machine, and then to disconnect from these programs and reconnect from the same or another machine, without losing any state. It gives you remote access to individual applications. Xpra is “rootless” or “seamless” desktop as regular programs, managed by your regular window manager. Sessions can be accessed over SSH, or password protected over plain TCP sockets. Xpra is usable over reasonably slow links and does its best to adapt to changing network bandwidth constraints.

We can use yum or dnf to install xpra on AlmaLinux 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install xpra.

Install xpra on AlmaLinux 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install xpra using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install xpra

Install xpra on AlmaLinux 8 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install xpra using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install xpra

How To Uninstall xpra on AlmaLinux 8

To uninstall only the xpra package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove xpra
