How To Install xfonts-traditional on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install xfonts-traditional on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is xfonts-traditional
xfonts-traditional is:
Provides “traditional” versions of fixed-width fonts.
These are a set of fonts (including 6x13 “fixed”), with foundry name “trad” instead of “misc”, with several glyphs replaced with earlier versions from before Markus Kuhn’s changes:
- balanced ` '
- less tall ( ) { }
- centred *
- high ~
- slightly higher &
- traditional appearance of W a
- in 10x20, versions of ; : , . matching ` ’ and each other
These changes make the fonts compatible with the US-ASCII character set. (UTF-8 is not compatible with ASCII in its usage of the backquote and some other characters.) With these fonts, pre-2000 documents (including ASCII art and GNU manuals) will render correctly.
Additionally, we provide ASCII-compatible versions of several Neep fonts (replacing “jmk” with “trad.jmk” in the foundry name).
Optionally, this package will edit your system configuration to make the default fonts used by xterm refer to the traditional font.
(This package does not actually contain the bulk of the font data; rather, it automatically generates the required modified fonts for each relevant font you have installed.)
There are three methods to install xfonts-traditional on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xfonts-traditional Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xfonts-traditional using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xfonts-traditional
Install xfonts-traditional Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xfonts-traditional using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xfonts-traditional
Install xfonts-traditional Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xfonts-traditional using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xfonts-traditional
How To Uninstall xfonts-traditional on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the xfonts-traditional package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xfonts-traditional
Uninstall xfonts-traditional And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xfonts-traditional and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xfonts-traditional
Remove xfonts-traditional Configurations and Data
To remove xfonts-traditional configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xfonts-traditional
Remove xfonts-traditional configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xfonts-traditional configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xfonts-traditional
