How To Install xfoil on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install xfoil
on Debian 9.
What is xfoil
xfoil is:
XFOIL is an interactive program for the design and analysis of subsonic isolated airfoils. It consists of a collection of menu-driven routines which perform various useful functions such as:
- Viscous (or inviscid) analysis of an existing airfoil
- Airfoil design and redesign by interactive specification of a surface speed distribution via screen cursor or mouse
- Airfoil redesign by interactive specification of new geometric parameters
- Blending of airfoils
- Drag polar calculation with fixed or varying Reynolds and/or Mach numbers.
- Plotting of geometry, pressure distributions, and polars
There are three methods to install xfoil
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xfoil Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xfoil
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xfoil

After updating apt database, We can install xfoil
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xfoil
Install xfoil Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xfoil
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xfoil
How To Uninstall xfoil on Debian 9
To uninstall only the xfoil
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xfoil
Uninstall xfoil And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xfoil
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xfoil
Remove xfoil Configurations and Data
To remove xfoil
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xfoil
Remove xfoil configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
