How To Install xemacs21-mule on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install xemacs21-mule on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is xemacs21-mule
xemacs21-mule is:
XEmacs is a full fledged programming language with a mail reader, news reader, info browser, web browser, calendar, specialized editor for more programming languages and other formats than most people encounter in a lifetime, and much more.
This package contains the actual binary used to run XEmacs. It depends on the xemacs21-support package for lisp and etc files, and the xemacs21-bin package for supporting binaries. This binary has been compiled with support for mule, but no input extensions.
Mule is the extension to (x)emacs that allows for the display of non-European characters (for example Japanese and Korean characters). This version of the package is mainly useful for only the display and reading of international characters. It does not have any mechanism for entering non-European characters (see the xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn package for that).
This package actually contains one of the three xemacs binaries available. They are xemacs21-nomule, xemacs21-mule and xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn.
There are three methods to install xemacs21-mule on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xemacs21-mule Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xemacs21-mule using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xemacs21-mule
Install xemacs21-mule Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xemacs21-mule using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xemacs21-mule
Install xemacs21-mule Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xemacs21-mule using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xemacs21-mule
How To Uninstall xemacs21-mule on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the xemacs21-mule package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xemacs21-mule
Uninstall xemacs21-mule And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xemacs21-mule and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xemacs21-mule
Remove xemacs21-mule Configurations and Data
To remove xemacs21-mule configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xemacs21-mule
Remove xemacs21-mule configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xemacs21-mule configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xemacs21-mule
