In this tutorial we learn how to install xdm on Kali Linux.

What is xdm

xdm is:

xdm manages a collection of X servers, which may be on the local host or remote machines. It provides services similar to those provided by init, getty, and login on character-based terminals: prompting for login name and password, authenticating the user, and running a session. xdm supports XDMCP (X Display Manager Control Protocol) and can also be used to run a chooser process which presents the user with a menu of possible hosts that offer XDMCP display management.

There are three methods to install xdm on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install xdm Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install xdm using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install xdm

Install xdm Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install xdm using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install xdm

Install xdm Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install xdm using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install xdm

How To Uninstall xdm on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the xdm package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove xdm

Uninstall xdm And Its Dependencies

To uninstall xdm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove xdm

Remove xdm Configurations and Data

To remove xdm configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge xdm

Remove xdm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove xdm configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xdm
