How To Install xbindkeys on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install xbindkeys on Kali Linux.

What is xbindkeys

xbindkeys is:

xbindkeys is a program that allows you to launch shell commands with your keyboard or your mouse under the X Window System. It links commands to keys or mouse buttons, using a configuration file. It’s independent of the window manager and can capture all keyboard keys (ex: Power, Wake…).

It optionally supports a guile-based configuration file layout, which enables you to access all xbindkeys internals, so you can have key combinations, double clicks or timed double clicks take actions. Also all functions that work in guile will work for xbindkeys.

There are three methods to install xbindkeys on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install xbindkeys Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install xbindkeys using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install xbindkeys

Install xbindkeys Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install xbindkeys using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install xbindkeys

Install xbindkeys Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install xbindkeys using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install xbindkeys

How To Uninstall xbindkeys on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the xbindkeys package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove xbindkeys

Uninstall xbindkeys And Its Dependencies

To uninstall xbindkeys and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove xbindkeys

Remove xbindkeys Configurations and Data

To remove xbindkeys configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge xbindkeys
