How To Install x3270 on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install x3270 on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is x3270
x3270 is:
x3270 opens a telnet connection to an IBM mainframe host in an X11 window. It can also connect to an IBM AS/400 as a 5250 terminal using the AS/400’s 3270 emulation. The window created by x3270 can use its own font for displaying characters, so it is a fairly accurate representation of an IBM 3278 or 3279.
x3270 is similar to tn3270(1) and c3270(1) except that it is X-based, not curses-based.
x3270 implements RFCs 2355 (TN3270E), 1576 (TN3270), and 1646 (LU name selection), and supports IND$FILE file transfer.
You will need to install x3270’s fonts locally, or on your font-server - they are required.
There are three methods to install x3270 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install x3270 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install x3270 using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install x3270
Install x3270 Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install x3270 using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install x3270
Install x3270 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install x3270 using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install x3270
How To Uninstall x3270 on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the x3270 package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove x3270
Uninstall x3270 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall x3270 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove x3270
Remove x3270 Configurations and Data
To remove x3270 configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge x3270
Remove x3270 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
