How To Install wine-binfmt on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install wine-binfmt on Kali Linux.
What is wine-binfmt
wine-binfmt is:
Wine is a free MS-Windows API implementation. This is still a work in progress and many applications may still not work.
This package registers Wine as an interpreter for Windows executables, using the kernel binfmt_misc module. This causes Wine to be invoked automatically whenever a Windows PE (Portable Executable) file is to be launched.
WARNING: This increases the risk of inadvertently launching Windows malware, so please make sure that you understand the security risks before blindly installing this package.
This feature is probably most interesting for automatic software testing. Desktop users usually don’t need it, so don’t install wine-binfmt unless you know that you need it. Refer to Wine’s README.debian for more information.
There are three methods to install wine-binfmt on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install wine-binfmt Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install wine-binfmt using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install wine-binfmtInstall wine-binfmt Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install wine-binfmt using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install wine-binfmtInstall wine-binfmt Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install wine-binfmt using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install wine-binfmtHow To Uninstall wine-binfmt on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the wine-binfmt package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wine-binfmtUninstall wine-binfmt And Its Dependencies
To uninstall wine-binfmt and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove wine-binfmtRemove wine-binfmt Configurations and Data
To remove wine-binfmt configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge wine-binfmtRemove wine-binfmt configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove wine-binfmt configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge wine-binfmtDependencies
