In this tutorial we learn how to install wicd-gtk on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is wicd-gtk

wicd-gtk is:

Wicd is a general-purpose network configuration server which aims to provide a simple but flexible interface for connecting to networks. Its features include:

  • wide variety of settings;
  • ability to connect to (and maintain profiles for) both wired and wireless networks;
  • support for many encryption schemes, including WEP, WPA, WPA2 and custom schemes;
  • wireless-tools compatibility.

This package provides the GTK+ client, which has no GNOME dependencies, making it easy to use in Xfce, Fluxbox, Openbox, Enlightenment, … It also supports a tray icon showing network activity and signal strength.

There are three methods to install wicd-gtk on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install wicd-gtk Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install wicd-gtk using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install wicd-gtk

Install wicd-gtk Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install wicd-gtk using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install wicd-gtk

Install wicd-gtk Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install wicd-gtk using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install wicd-gtk

How To Uninstall wicd-gtk on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the wicd-gtk package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove wicd-gtk

Uninstall wicd-gtk And Its Dependencies

To uninstall wicd-gtk and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove wicd-gtk

Remove wicd-gtk Configurations and Data

To remove wicd-gtk configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge wicd-gtk

Remove wicd-gtk configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove wicd-gtk configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge wicd-gtk
