Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install w-scan on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is w-scan

w-scan is:

w_scan scans for DVB-S/S2, DVB-T, DVB-C and ATSC channels and creates a channels.conf, that can be used directly by the Linux Video Disc Recorder VDR. It is also possible to output channels in a format readable by the czap/tzap tools provided by linuxtv-dvb-zap, xine, totem, kaffeine or me-tv.

Unlike the scan utility in linuxtv-dvb-apps, there is no need to specify an initial transponder and w_scan automatically detects the DVB or ATSC card to be used.

There are three methods to install w-scan on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install w-scan Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install w-scan using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install w-scan

Install w-scan Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install w-scan using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install w-scan

Install w-scan Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install w-scan using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install w-scan

How To Uninstall w-scan on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the w-scan package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove w-scan

Uninstall w-scan And Its Dependencies

To uninstall w-scan and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove w-scan

Remove w-scan Configurations and Data

To remove w-scan configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge w-scan

Remove w-scan configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove w-scan configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge w-scan
