How To Install vm on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install vm on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is vm
vm is:
VM (View Mail) is an Emacs subsystem that allows UNIX mail to be read and disposed of within Emacs. Commands exist to do the normal things expected of a mail user agent, such as generating replies, saving messages to folders, deleting messages and so on. There are other more advanced commands that do tasks like bursting and creating digests, message forwarding, and organizing message presentation according to various criteria. With smtpmail in modern emacsen, you do not need an MTA locally in order to use VM.
This package does not cater to XEmacs, since vm comes (by default) bundled in with XEmacs.
There are three methods to install vm on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install vm Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install vm using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install vm
Install vm Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install vm using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install vm
Install vm Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install vm using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install vm
How To Uninstall vm on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the vm package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove vm
Uninstall vm And Its Dependencies
To uninstall vm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove vm
Remove vm Configurations and Data
To remove vm configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge vm
Remove vm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove vm configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge vm
