In this tutorial we learn how to install virt-manager on Debian 12.

What is virt-manager

virt-manager is:

The virt-manager application is a desktop user interface for managing virtual machines through libvirt. It primarily targets KVM VMs, but also manages Xen and LXC (Linux containers). It presents a summary view of running domains, their live performance & resource utilization statistics. Wizards enable the creation of new domains, and configuration & adjustment of a domain’s resource allocation & virtual hardware. An embedded VNC and SPICE client viewer presents a full graphical console to the guest domain.

There are three methods to install virt-manager on Debian 12. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install virt-manager Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install virt-manager using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install virt-manager

Install virt-manager Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install virt-manager using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install virt-manager

Install virt-manager Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install virt-manager using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install virt-manager

How To Uninstall virt-manager on Debian 12

To uninstall only the virt-manager package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove virt-manager

Uninstall virt-manager And Its Dependencies

To uninstall virt-manager and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove virt-manager

Remove virt-manager Configurations and Data

To remove virt-manager configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge virt-manager
