What is vim-minimal

VIM (VIsual editor iMproved) is an updated and improved version of the vi editor. Vi was the first real screen-based editor for UNIX, and is still very popular. VIM improves on vi by adding new features and more. The vim-minimal package includes a minimal version of VIM, which is installed into /bin/vi for use when only the root partition is present. NOTE the vim-common package is installed.

We can use yum or dnf to install vim-minimal on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install vim-minimal.

Install vim-minimal on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install vim-minimal using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install vim-minimal

Install vim-minimal on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install vim-minimal using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install vim-minimal

How To Uninstall vim-minimal on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the vim-minimal package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove vim-minimal
