How To Install vim on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install vim
on Debian 9.
What is vim
vim is:
Vim is an almost compatible version of the UNIX editor Vi.
Many new features have been added: multi level undo, syntax highlighting, command line history, on-line help, filename completion, block operations, folding, Unicode support, etc.
This package contains a version of vim compiled with a rather standard set of features. This package does not provide a GUI version of Vim. See the other vim-* packages if you need more (or less).
There are three methods to install vim
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install vim Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install vim
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install vim

Update apt database with apt

After updating apt database, We can install vim

Install vim Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude

How To Uninstall vim on Debian 9
To uninstall only the vim
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove vim

To uninstall vim
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove vim
Remove vim Configurations and Data
To remove vim
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge vim
