In this tutorial we learn how to install vim-ctrlp on Kali Linux.

What is vim-ctrlp

vim-ctrlp is:

CtrlP features:

  • written in pure Vimscript
  • full support for Vim’s regexp as search patterns
  • built-in Most Recently Used (MRU) files monitoring and search
  • built-in project’s root finder
  • open multiple files at once
  • create new files and directories
  • execute Ex commands on an opening file (jump to a line, to a string or do anything)
  • optional cross-sessions caching and history allow for fast initialization
  • mappings and usage conform to Vim’s conventions

To enable this addon in your (Neo)Vim use one of these two methods:

  • Add “packadd! CtrlP” to your vimrc file
  • Invoke: vam install ctrlp if you use Vim Addon Manager

There are three methods to install vim-ctrlp on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install vim-ctrlp Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-ctrlp using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install vim-ctrlp

Install vim-ctrlp Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-ctrlp using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install vim-ctrlp

Install vim-ctrlp Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-ctrlp using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install vim-ctrlp

How To Uninstall vim-ctrlp on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the vim-ctrlp package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove vim-ctrlp
